This caused the casinos trying various things like offering a reward in case of a ten to one pay out, if the black jack player had a "black" jack and an ace of spades. The jack could be either clubs or spades. After the game got well-liked, the bonus payout quickly vanished from the game.

Any hand which reaches a total of twenty-one is deemed a winner. The total should not be in excess of twenty one, if it does the hand is said to be "bust." The target of any player is to best the casino. If both the player and the casino have the same hand value, it’s called "push" (a tie), with not either the player or the croupier winning the hand.
